Peavey PSM 3 White Boundary Microphone

Specifically designed for a lowprofile, surface-mountedconfiguration, the PSM 3 is ideallysuited for stage performances aswell as video conferencing andother boundary applications. ThePSM 3 contains a wide range ofunidirectional condenser capsulesmounted in its rugged housing,allowing it to become part of theacoustical boundary when placedon a flat, reflective surface.

When a conventional microphone isused near a large, reflectingsurface, the sound reflected fromthe surface reaches the capsule ata slightly different time than that ofthe direct source.

Depending on the distance and thefrequency, the reflected sound mayeither add to or subtract from thedirect source, resulting in a numberof peaks and dips in the outputresponse. This is also referred to asComb Filter Effect and can seriouslydegrade the reproduced sound.

When the PSM 3 is placed on thereflecting surface, it becomes partof the reflecting boundary and theinterior reflections are eliminated.The results are a cleaner, smoother,more natural sound.

Another advantage to using thePSM 3 in surface mounted (orboundary layer) operation is thatthe sound pressure at the surfaceis approximately twice the value asit would be in free space (noreflective surfaces). This results in a6 dB increase in output level andan added 6 dB of signal-to-noiseratio.

With a unidirectiona,l surface-mounted microphone such as thePSM 3, there is also a 3 dBimprovement in directivity, whichhelps both feedback rejection and acontrol of unwanted sound.
